S & B offer pink slip inspection and esafety checks. No Blue slips, sorry. Your registration renewal notice will state whether or not you need an inspection. The results of your eSafety Check will be sent to Roads and Maritime Services electronically.

To renew your registration, you may need to get a safety check. If your renewal notice says ‘inspection required’ you will require a safety check at an authorised safety check station. Most vehicles more than five years old must pass an annual safety check, trailers weighing less than 250kg do not need to be inspected.

What is a safety check?

Safety checks are basic mechanical checks, targeting certain vehicle components that may cause a risk to vehicle occupants and other road users if they are not operating correctly or are excessively worn. After your vehicle has passed the safety check, the station sends a report to the RTA electronically.

Examiners will check the following vehicle components during a safety check:

Vehicle identification (AUVIS only), Brakes, Steering and suspension, Wheels and tyres, Body condition, Seats and seat belts, Lights and headlight aim, Engine / drive line, Exhaust system, Towing attachment, LPG system (accredited examiners only), Number plates (obscured, faded, unauthorised) and No dangerous protrusions fitted (brackets for spotlight, fishing rod holders etc).

Who performs a safety check?

Only stations authorised by the RTA are able to perform a safety check. These include:

Which vehicles need to be checked and when?

Your registration renewal notice will tell you if your vehicle is due for a safety check. If you want to renew your registration and your vehicle is more than 5 years old, you will need a safety check.

If want to register a light vehicle that is not currently registered in NSW, you will need an AUVIS inspection.

If you want to register a heavy vehicle, you will need a HVAIS inspection.

What type of safety check do I need?

New registrations or interstate vehicle registration transfers. Vehicle identity and safety check. Valid for 28 days. Attend an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station.

All renewals of registration or transfer of registration within NSW. Vehicle safety check. Valid for 42 days.

If your vehicle PASSES the safety check:

1. The authorised station will send an electronic safety check report to the RTA.
2. Ensure you have purchased a green slip.
3. Renew your registration by mail, phone, online, or at a motor registry.

If your vehicle FAILS the safety check:

1. The safety check station will issue you with a repairs needed report (previously white slip). This report details the parts of your vehicle that need to be repaired.
2. Make all the required repairs within 14 days of the repairs needed report issue date. If you do not make all the required repairs within the 14 day period your repairs needed report will expire. You will need to return to a safety check station and to get another safety check – a new safety check fee will apply.
3. Get your repairs checked. NOTE: If you return to the same safety check station to have the repairs checked – no additional safety check fees will apply. If you do not return to the same safety check station you will be charged a new safety check fee.
4. If the repairs have been checked and the repairs needed report is cleared, your vehicle will pass the safety check.
